Excerpts from True Ghost Stories:

"As soon as we turned down this final road we were met with a fence corralling us from a large driveway onto a single-lane dirt road. Hanging on the fence was single electric lantern. As I passed the lantern, the “trunk open” light on my dash suddenly turned on. I stopped the car. We all sat there silently for a moment, our eyes fixed on the gleaming red light. Our hair standing on end, we all slowly looked back towards the rear window. The trunk was closed."

"Even from the get-go, fears that it was too late had already sprung up. Even the other boys had suspicions of the old stringy hag that is said to live among the trees. With unnaturally long, blackened, rotting fingernails and a penchant for children’s souls, the legend of this witch was common knowledge. "

"It was a large one-story building swallowed by creeping ivy. The plaster was peeling and the white Grecian pillars had cracks running up and down them. Then we saw the large wooden double doors and the stained glass window, and the statue of the Virgin Mary standing alone in a patch of tall grass. We realized we were passing a church. We all felt chills as we rolled on by, each of us double-checking that our doors were locked."
